Pregnancy can happen from sex that takes place several days before ovulation, not just on the day an egg is released. That can make timing confusing, especially if you are trying to understand your chances of pregnancy.

Knowing how ovulation and the fertile window work can give you a better idea of when pregnancy is most likely. If you think you may already be pregnant, Pregnancy Options Center of Warren County can help you get answers. Your Fertile Window Is More Than One Day

Ovulation happens when one of your ovaries releases an egg. After its release, the egg can generally be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hours.

However, sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for several days. Because of this, sex in the days leading up to ovulation can result in pregnancy. Your fertile window generally includes about five days before ovulation, the day of ovulation, and roughly the following day.

Your chances of becoming pregnant are typically highest when you have sex in the days immediately before or around ovulation.

Can You Predict Ovulation?

If you have a regular 28-day menstrual cycle, ovulation may occur around day 14, counting the first day of your period as day one. But not everyone’s body follows a 28-day schedule, and ovulation doesn’t necessarily happen on the same cycle day every month.

You may notice changes around ovulation, including cervical mucus that becomes clearer, thinner, and more slippery. Tracking your basal body temperature can show a slight temperature increase after ovulation. Ovulation predictor kits can also detect the hormonal surge that typically happens shortly before an egg is released.

These methods can help you recognize patterns, but none can predict ovulation with perfect accuracy.

What If Your Periods Are Irregular?

Irregular periods can make it harder to estimate fertile days. Stress, changes in weight, exercise, certain health conditions, and other factors may affect when you ovulate.

This also means relying only on a calendar or period-tracking app isn’t a dependable way to know whether pregnancy could occur after sex.
